Turmeric, in common with a multitude of spices has a rich history of healthy nutrition as well as its use as a cookery ingredient. Like ginger it is sourced from the root of a flowering plant. The main active constituent of turmeric is curcumin which gives the spice its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and therefore its health benefits.
The possible natural health benefits provided by turmeric include:
● curcumin is a natural anti-inflammatory – it has shown to be more effective than commonly used pharmaceuticals
● protection against heart disease – curcumin has been shown to improve endothelial function (the membrane that lines the heart and blood vessels) including the regulation of blood pressure
● easing of symptoms of osteoarthritis – through its potent anti-inflammatory properties
● prevention or treatment of type 2 diabetes – through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, improving insulin resistance and stabilising blood sugar levels
● treatment of depression – curcumin increases levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein found in the central nervous system that plays a key role in keeping nerve cells healthy.
● improving skin health – through its potent anti-inflammatory ant antioxidant properties curcumin has been shown to be effective in treating a number of skin conditions including acne, psoriasis, photo-aging and eczema
It would appear that turmeric provides a significant number of healthy nutrition advantages, but how can you incorporate it into your diet?
● turmeric may be obtained as a supplement
● grated or sliced turmeric root may be enjoyed as a hot tea
● dried turmeric powder or fresh grated or chopped turmeric root may be used as cooking ingredient giving an intense yellow-orange colour and an earthy/musky flavour. Try this in curries, paellas, in soups and incorporated in salad dressings
