side effects of statins

You have just been diagnosed with high blood cholesterol and have been medically prescribed statins to deal with the problem. You’re more than happy with this course of action, particularly as you know that statins have been hailed as a “wonder drug” in tackling the problem of high blood cholesterol. This kind of pharmaceutical industry propaganda obscures the unpleasant and potentially dangerous side effects of statins.

In this article we will look at these side effects.

What are the side effects of statins?

One startling fact that Big Pharma lies aim to obscure is that statins have in excess of 300 potential adverse side effects. No, that is not a typing error – 300 potential adverse side effects. The worst of these being possible heart failure!

More common side effects

As stated by the UK’s National Health Service, these include the following:

•  Muscular pain

•  Dizziness

•  Nausea

Less common side effects of statins

These may include the following:

•  Vomiting

•  Memory problems

•  Hair loss

•  Pins and needles

•  Inflammation of the liver (hepatitis) which can cause flu-like symptoms

•  Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), which can cause severe abdominal pain

•  Skin problems, for example, acne or itchy red rashes

•  Sexual issues such as reduced sex drive or erectile dysfunction

So, given the above information and considering a risk-benefit analysis, are statins worth the risk? The answer is, that for the majority of people, the answer is NO, they are not as there are plenty of natural ways to lower and control blood cholesterol.

So, what’s in it for the pharmaceutical industry?

Quite simply profit – the global statin market is currently worth $15 billion per year is expected to rise year by year.

An example of this is Atorvastatin – the most prescribed stain drug in 2020 – this clocked in at a staggering 114,509,814 prescriptions.

With this kind of money involved with the global statins market is it particularly surprising that the moral compass of Big Pharma is not particularly evident?
